“it all started off with an art kit, and then it turned into a love; this love of folding origami paper”

The Artist, Sarah!

My name is Sarah Haehn, and I create origami art. I have been folding origami for about ten years in the city of Rochester NY.

The folding process for myself started off being very basic. I would watch youtube videos to learn how to do basic folds, and instructional videos to make forms. Until one day, it just clicked! I then decided to try other forms, than just animals. I started to learn how to make different kinds of geometric shapes. The shapes, that are used mostly in my work are triangles and squares. These shapes are the two major components for an origami base. I tend to use brightly colored solid paper in my pieces, rather than patterns. I believe this gives the art more of an impact. I also enjoy trying new things within my art. For example, when I create an origami canvas wall art piece, I sometimes use other objects, like chopsticks, or spoons! This makes each piece unique and fresh. I tend to gravitate making things into mass quantities of origami and inanimate objects. I feel like seeing things in masses are very appealing to the eye.

I have sought out inspiration by seeing other artist work, and by being a floral designer. I have always really enjoyed the aspect of 3D art. The one artist who really influenced myself to create the way I do is, Ran Hwang. She creates art by using masses of pins and buttons that she hand creates. I hope to be fortunate enough one day, to see one of her art installation pieces in a gallery. By creating the origami art that I do, I hope I can spread that enjoyment to other people by seeing my pieces
